A while back, we went to Istanbul for a few days. I had never been to Turkey before so I was really looking forward to exploring a new city in a new country. I probably don't have to convince you to want to go and visit this great city too, so I'll just share some pictures that I took (with my old camera!).
Don't get me wrong, I love Utrecht and have enjoyed living here for the past 9 (!) years. But every time I"m in Amsterdam, I'm reminded of how much I like this city as well. I was born here, so I can actually call myself a 'Mokumse'! That might have something to do with it...
My sister moved to Amsterdam about a year ago and recently found a lovely apartment in the city center, close to the Westerkerk. My dad joked I should move here too, because she lives around the corder from a craft store (which is atually called 'knutselwinkel' - how cute is that), an enormous beads shop, AND an arts supply shop. Seriously. Who wouldn't want to live here?? Well, my girlfriend, as a matter of fact...so I guess we'll just stay in Utrecht for now. But I'll definitely come back here a lot!
Indonesia is espcially known for its batik, but also for so many more art and handicraft forms such as woodcarving, silver smithing, stone carving, etc. Bali is one of the hotspots for Indonesian arts, with many local villages specialised in one or other craft. Visiting them was very high on my to do list! And rightly so, it turned out...
First stop: batik, of course! We visited a gallery and workshop in Yogyakarta and were allowed to just walk around and take pictures. The kind lady explained the whole process to us and we understand now why the real, handmade batik is so expensive.
Woodcarving! Entire villages were specialized in this craft, with skills that have been finetuned for generations. We were taken to a store (also known as tourist trap) with a huge collection of statues. We didn't buy anything as most of it wouldn't have fit into our luggage (or home) but it was great to see the details in the craftmanship.
It's been a bit quiet around here lately, but with good reason: I've been away on holiday to Indonesia! We actually got back a few weeks ago, but then life kicked right back in. Many exciting things have been happening! More on that later, for now just a few pictures of the loveliness that is Indonesia.
